Pharmaceutical active ingredients are significant in the determination

Chronic dry coughs for instance require cough mix formulations with
higher amount of active medicinal ingredients such as antitussives which
are available in 45 percent of cough syrups. This makes API industry a
sensitive disease control and pharmaceutical research sector operating
under strict production and ethical guidelines.

World Health Organization (WHO) became more actively involved in
regulating global API production standards after 100 Haitian children
died as a result of cough syrups containing diethylene glycol instead of
glycerin. The1996 incident prompted the world health body to tighten
risk assessment and prioritization guidelines as well as manufacture
system suitability, precision and accuracy methods used in API
production.

According to WHO, active medicinal ingredients account for 30 to 45
percent of the total cost of human medicines’ shelf prices. As a result,
API operators are required to keep their profit margins below 10
percent. This is an ethical measure aimed at eradicating greed within
the pharmaceutical industry. Few medicine producing firms have in-house
API departments making outsourcing of API services a major factor in
efficient and sufficient production of pharmaceutical drugs and the
determination of their shelf prices.

API operators are also required to adopt safe environmental practices.
This is because medical active ingredients’ raw materials consist of
chemicals that can harm the environment when disposed off irresponsibly
in concentrated forms.
